2020 Buick Encore GX safety features – exceeding expectations
In 2020, Buick decided to up the ante for the Encore and introduced the Encore GX to the market. Even though it sounds as though the GX is just another Encore trim, it's actually a completely different car meant to replace the older model.
It is a little bit confusing as both nameplates coexist and are still produced in 2020 and probably in 2021 as well, but make no mistake about it, the Encore GX is the future.
Bigger, more refined, and with plenty more power, the GX is what the Encore once was – an exceptional small crossover SUV that will take on any of its competitors to probably come out a winner.
Before we talk about the safety features available on the brand-new GX, let’s get a little more familiar with the car as a whole.
Standing at 171.1 inches bumper to bumper, and with a height of 64.1 inches, the Encore GX adds 4.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and offers plenty of comfort even on the back seat.
Exterior looks are obviously straight out from the drawing board and onto the street as the GX looks every bit as modern as any new release this year. With sharp, chic lines all-round, it builds on Encore’s signature look and manages to add an air of sophistication. With cool colors made available on any trim, you’ll turn a head or two driving this beauty down the street.
Under the hood, the base engine is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder that delivers just as many horsepower as Encore’s only engine choice, 137 horsepower, but does it more efficiently at 28 miles per gallon combined. There’s also an available upgrade, the 1.3-liter three-cylinder that produces 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque which, despite the added power, manages 31 miles per gallon combined, a figure well above the class average.
As far as safety features go, the 2020 Encore GX punches way above its price tag with perks like an 8.0-inch color touch coupled with what many consider to be the best infotainment system this side of $40,000, GM’s latest software interface. All future owners will also enjoy Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio streaming, a 4 G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and Alexa integration to name just a few.
But where the 2020 Encore GX really shines is when it comes to safety features. For a price tag that can only be described as entry-level, the Buick crossover delivers some premium options. The standard list of safety features opens with the Forward Collision Alert. It then includes something many luxury crossovers don't offer on base models and that is automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, an advanced safety feature the simple Encore doesn't even offer as a paid option on any of its trims.
All future owners will also get Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning and cruise control.
Available upgrades include a rearview camera mirror, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an automated parking system, and adaptive cruise control.
That’s pretty much every available advanced safety feature on the market today, all up to be fitted on this small-sized, premium crossover SUV.
