Safety features on the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse
The 2021 Chevy Traverse has yet to be tested and scored by the NHTSA but its 2020 rendition received 5 stars out of 5, so we’re expecting that perfect score to carry on into 2021 as well. So how did the Traverse manage to score so highly on its official safety test?
When you talk Traverse and safety, there are three trims you need to focus on – the base model, the LT leather, and the RS.
So let's take a closer look and see which safety features come standard on which trim.
2021 Traverse L- the base model
Traverse's base model comes at a low price and doesn't offer much in terms of active safety features. It's equipped with an airbag system, a rearview camera, and the Rear Seat Reminder.
It also comes standard with the Teen Driver, a package that's meant to help new drivers make better decisions on the roar. With it, parents can set the maximum speed limit and radio volume to lower levels and they get access to reports telling them how many miles the car was driven and at what speeds. The Teen Driver system also sends an immediate alert in the case of a collision or a crash.
2021 Traverse LT leather
With the LT leather, the Traverse ups its safety features game considerably.
First future owners get standard Blind Spot Monitoring, a system that will prevent you from colliding with other vehicles while changing lanes. Also standard is the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert that uses cameras, radar, and sensors to monitor oncoming traffic when you back away from a tight parking spot that offers low visibility. If the system detects an oncoming car, it will alert you to hit the brakes so you won’t back up right in front of it.
Lane Change Alert, a system that will boost driver awareness and keep you from drifting out of your lane unintentionally is also included under the LT leather, as is Rear Park Assist.
2021 Traverse RS
The RS seems to come with every imaginable safety feature out there, except for the Adaptive Cruise Control that comes as standard only on the Traverse High Country.
The Traverse RS includes everything under the LT Leather trim, to which it adds Forward Collision Warning and Following Distance Indicator both systems meant to increase driver awareness, but more importantly it also comes with Front Pedestrian Braking and Front Automatic Emergency Braking. Again using the car's sensors, cameras, and radar, the vehicle can recognize imminent accidents such as hitting a pedestrian or another vehicle while driving forward. If it does, it will first send out an alert and if you fail to hit the brakes in time, it will do it for you in an attempt to diminish the severity of the accident or avoid it completely.
Finally, the RS also features Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, an active safety feature that will gently steer the car to keep it in its lane if it senses you're changing lanes but the blinking signal isn't on and you're also not moving the steering wheel in that direction.
