GMC Terrain Safety Feature Information for Connecticut SUV Shoppers
Few people can resist turning their heads as the new GMC Terrain rolls by. Its daring, modern look suggests a car much more glamorous than its actual price point.
Terrain is where looks meet utility and comfort, but above all else, the GMC Terrain is becoming synonymous with safety.
Set aside the upscale look and feel of its exterior, the comfortable interior, the phenomenal tech features like its highly responsive, easy-to-use infotainment system, and let’s discuss safety features.
Solid crash test scores give the Terrain the much-needed official stamp of approval all families look for in their future cars. The NHTSA gave the Terrain a solid 5 out of 5 stars on all its tests except for the rollover where it scored 4 out of 5 which is exceptional for any SUV considering their center of gravity is much higher than a sedan’s.
The 5 out of 5 stars it gets on overall safety are largely due to what GMC introduced as the "Pro Safety" package for the first time this year. It consists of a long list of safety features that all Terrain models come equipped with, regardless if it's the top Denali trim or the SL base.
The first component of GMC’s Pro Safety list is Automatic Emergency Braking, a system that activates as soon as it registers an imminent front-end collision. Once triggered, it can help you significantly reduce the severity of the collision or avoid it completely by either automatically engaging the brake hard or by enhancing driver hard braking.
The Forward Collision Alert and Forward Distance Indicator are also on the list and they combine well to help you stay safe while driving behind another vehicle. While the former sends imminent collision alerts as well as when you’re driving too close to the car in front of you, something novice teen drivers will really find helpful, the latter shows drivers the following gap time.
The Lane Keep Assistance with Lane Departure Warning system is capable of taking active action to keep you safe. As soon as the car’s sensors detect a lane change yet no signal is turned on and there’s no movement registered in the steering wheel either, the car itself will gently correct the car’s trajectory to keep it in its lane.
Another great safety feature included in the package is the Front Pedestrian Braking. Inside the city, at speeds slower than 50 mph, the system detects imminent collisions with pedestrians and activates the Automatic Emergency Braking response where the car will either hit the brakes hard by itself or it will enhance driver hard braking. Especially effective during the day, it can help you avoid or at the very least lessen the severity of imminent accidents involving pedestrians that cross your car's path.
The IntelliBeam headlamps complete the list of standard safety features. At night, the system automatically switches on the high beams and scans for the headlights of cars coming your way. When approaching headlights are registered, the IntelliBeam system switches to low beams enough for the car to pass and then turns the high beam back up.
An optional safety pack is also available. It’s dubbed Driver Alert and adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Park Assist, and a Safety Alert Seat. Even in the optional pack's absence, the Terrain is an exceptionally well-equipped car as far as safety features go, but once you add the Driver Alert, the car becomes one of the safest SUVs to have ever roamed the streets.
